Timers are not easy to program! But, the ECx Timer is one of the more sensible. One can test it immediately after installation, by accepting the default watering time of 10 minutes per zone. To initially test the installation, just press the MANUAL switch twice then press NEXT to test the next zone, etc.  An optional wind or rain sensor can be connected to inhibit the zone outputs during these conditions. SAVES WATER.

Each zone output module connects to two valve solenoids. Typical wiring to solenoids is via #16 gauge direct-burial cable, sharing one common wire.
The timer has a Master Valve (MV) output that can be used to turn on a common valve,  such as a main line valve at a cistern. One application of this feature is to remove pressure from lightweight plastic distribution piping when all flow is stopped. The MV output is ON when any zone is ON.
Alternatively,  a well water pump (solar?!) can be controlled using a power relay connected to these terminals. The pump relay coil should be rated at 12Vdc and draw less than 0.5A.
