Medium-Sized Backup Solar Power Kits

The following power systems will allow a home to survive a temporary electric power blackout. Batteries will be kept charged by solar energy. If utility power fails, then a DC-to-AC inverter will automatically operate selected appliances (usually refrigerator and lights). In the normal situation, when utility power is available, excess solar power will assist in reducing the electric bill (slows the electric meter). Even though the electricity metering may be reduced by only 10%, this may eliminate the costly  "over baseline" billing.
There are two ways to connect the systems: One method is to install a new, permanent wire run from the solar system to the the critical appliances (see illustration); this will be the most attractive installation. A simpler method is to connect the appliances via a portable cord; this way, no electrical inspection is involved.

This power system has a two-position switch that the homeowner uses to select either of two automatic modes:
1. Utility Primary - - In this mode, the appliances are normallyon utility power. Appliances will transfer to battery backup if utility fails.
2. Solar Primary - - In this mode, the appliances are normallyon solar and battery power. Appliances will transfer to utility if batteriesare low. Saves on utility bill.
Note: For larger power systems, 1000 to 5000Watts,  see the Utility Grid-Tiepower catalog. These larger systems will provide up to 100% of  home powerneeds from solar or wind energy.

120VAC LIGHTING KIT FOR MEDIUM HOME (AUTO CHANGEOVER) - - 200W
This kit generates 200 Watts of solar power and will automaticallyswitch over to backup power, when utility power fails. The complete kit includesfour Solarex solar panels (53Watts ea), battery charge regulator, and DC/ACinverter. Can operate lamps, a small TV, microwave oven, and refrigerator. Or additional lights. Forevery-day use, provides 4 hrs of light and TV every night, plus refrigerator (peak load 1500Watts, total). Batteries will provide power for sunless days. Installation: These kits include installation instructions. They may be installed by the homeowner or his selected contractor. Typical installation labor cost is $500 to $1500. The installer provides wire and common hardwire. If done by homeowner, his work should be safety-checked by a journeyman electrician. In any case, an engineer from CI will inspect the installation before turn on.
