Operating Advice: All Solar Garden Lamps - - For long battery life, CI recommends that a solar garden lamp be turned off  for 4 days and allowed to fully charge in bright sun. This should be done periodically and at least annually. 
Fluorescent vs. LED? - - Which is more efficient? Colored LEDs are more efficient than white LEDs. Its true, LED lamps are simple and reliable solid-state devices. And this may be the overriding consideration in small luminaries. But fluorescent lamp bulbs are presently more efficient than any of  the LEDs. So when connected to the same size of solar panel, a fluorescent lamp will produce more total light-hours per given period than an LED lamp. This rule also applies to larger lamps, including signs and building lighting. Note that the efficiency of a fluorescent lamp increases as its diameter is reduced! This is why compact fluorescents are highly recommended for energy conservation. Finally, HID lamps can be the most efficient of all. These may replace large fluorescents in the future, but small, cool-running CCFLs will be with us for decades more. - - John

 
Catalina EarthLamps: Coach Post
These post-mounted metal coach lamps are ultra-efficient, 12Vdc fluorescent outdoor fixtures. They are ideal for illuminating pathways and driveways in remote areas. Many times brighter than small LED-type pathway markers.One can read a newspaper under these lamps. The coach lamps are the popular Catalina or BelAir fixtures that are converted to 12Vdc operation, using CI  EarthLamp miniature fluorescent bulbs (described in another section). Fixtures mount on 3-inch, round tubular standards. Each lamp can be independently self-powered by the addition of our 12V  PV solar power kits, below. Or, any number of lamps may simply be connected to any central source of 12-Volt power. Long life: CI EarthLamps  last for a minimum of 5000 hours.A life of 20,000 hours is expected. Operate at 10 to 14Vdc. Equivalence to larger incandescent lamps is an approximatecomparison of  brightness. With instructions. NOTE: on custom order, CI can convert most other architectural luminaries to solar power.

Solar Power Kits for EarthLamp
Here is a simple 12Vdc outdoor lighting system for rural driveways and walkways. Also useful at city homes where concrete paving makes underground wiring difficult. Kit consists of  a BP Solarex solar panel, a lighting controller module, wire, and instructions. Works with 1, 2, and 5W Coach Post  lamps or other low-power EarthLamp fixture, including  flood and spot lights. The controller turns lamp on and off at dusk and dawn. It also maintains battery charge by turning the solar PV panel on and off as required. Works with any 12V storage battery such as marine RV or similar deep-cycle battery, obtained locally. Either flooded or sealed battery is suitable.

12V Battery Power Cartridge
Used in our 3" post fixtures and included in that pricing. Available separately for other solar lighting uses, the 12V Battery Power Cartridge consists of a long-life, tubular rechargeable battery pack and a lighting control module. The control module regulates solar battery charging and turns the connected lamp on at sundown and off at sunup.A 12V coach lamp (such as listed above), or a security lamp, attaches to the top of the cartridge, becoming a lamp pedestal. Output connection: lamp.Input connection: PV solar panel. Required battery size: multiply load current(A)by on-time(Hrs) to find required battery AH. For example, the 0.15Alamp(above) willoperate for 5/0.15  = 33.3hrs from the 5AH batterycartridge.Or, a 100-Watt security lamp will operate for approx 1/2 hr, etc. Choose sufficientbattAH so that average charge/discharge cycle will be limited to 1/2 (or less) of available Batt AH listed.
