Sense of Heating/Cooling Controllers Produced by Goldline
GoldLine (Independent Energy) controllers are basically similar but come in
variants for optimum fit to specific applications. All controllers
are the ON/OFF type (as apposed to proportional control). All are differential,
meaning that the controller will energize its output relay when two sensor
input resistances are sufficiently different. Backround Info: Control engineers may
be more rigorous in terminology, but in the trades, the name differential controller applies when
both sensor inputs (thermistors) are external. In the trades, a setpoint controller gets its name from
having one of its sensor inputs connected to a potentiometer w/ dial. A domestic
heating/cooling wall thermostat can also be called a setpoint controller.
A thermostat that is used in hydronic or radiant heating is usually called
an aquastat, but is also a setpoint
controller. When a technician says that a controller "calls for heat" (or
cooling), he means that the difference in sensor resistances is such that
the condition is met for the output relay to be energized. For more product
