Finished panels are 16" wide pan with customer selected batten and clip width. Standard lengths are 9' 7.2" for nominal 12 volt or 18' 3" for nominal 24V panels. Minimum roof slope 1:12. | Shingles - Flexible thin-film solar cell shingle with textured surface is nailed into place over 30-lb felt under-layment. 5" of exposed shingle is the active area, 7" tabs are covered. Each 12' x 86.4" shingle has two 12" long 18 ga. lead wires exiting from the underside. Each section requires drilling two small holes in the under-layment for leading the output wires into the attic space. Nominal 6V output per shingle. | ![]() |

All United Solar products are based on a sophisticated multi-layer amorphous silicon thin-film solar cell developed originally by Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. This spectrum-splitting cell, shown schematically at the right, is constructed of three separate p-i-n type, amorphous semiconductor solar sub-cells, each with a different spectral response characteristic. In this way, the cell can convert the different visible and near infrared wavelengths of sunlight with optimal efficiency.. Note On PV Efficiency Comparisons: For a given area, crystalline cells are more efficient than amorphous. When area is not a consideration, for a given wattage rating, amorphous cells are equal to crystalline. Tested side-by-side in low light, an amorphous array may even produce slightly more power than a crystalline array. Debate will continue on the relative service lifetimes, however. - - John |
