Exciting Opportunities in
High-Definition TV (HDTV)
Urban: Cable is the Way
Rural: Terrestrial UHF  and Sat is the Way

Cable, satellite, terrestrial off-air TV technologies are going digital, along with DVD, Internet, and PCs,  and converging toward high-definition TV formats:
Cable Video: In US, cable (CATV) operators are adding HDTV options to their sevices.
Satellite TV Services:
SDTV is well established. Now HDTV (called ATSC in USA) are ramping up in USA; DVB is popular in EU.
Terrrestial TV Services: USA is operating several hundred DTV stations in USA. Europe is reducing its terrestial TV in favor of satellite.
DVD Video: Newer DVD systems, as a part of "home theater" sets, are offering  HDTV. The DVI interface on newer DVD players will drive HDTV displays or PC monitors, giving HDTV a truly international interface standard.
Internet TV: Internet video broadcasting (perhaps to be called by another name) is on the horizon. HDTV options are proposed.
PC TV: PC adapter cards now allow PC and Mac computers to receive almost anything that is broadast as RF, including shortwave and FM broadcasts as well as analog TV (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) and digital TV ( DBS, DTV, and ATSC).

For the future of media in commerce, education, or entertainment, we can expect that computers and TV sets will continue to merge.  Multimedia may not be the best term to use in the future. "Unimedia" is a better description of this trend.

We look for the concept of "open standards" to spread from the PC world into the changing broadcast media. We can expect continued battle between "open" and "proprietary", with battle casualties to both.

The Multimedia Transmission Standards
